Gentle Warriors: Arun and Poonam’s Perspective

“I have been through something similar but I never recollected those days while caring for Pranay. You forget yourself also… my legs usually hurt a lot but that time the pain also vanished.”  – Poonam

Arun and Poonam became primary caregivers to their son, Pranay, when he was suddenly diagnosed with lymphoma. The family did feel thrown aback, but after being assured by the doctors that it is a treatable condition,  a sense of hope filled them.

As parents, they talk about the difficulty in seeing their son suffer at a young age. They talk about their experience in different hospitals and with the professionals there. They seldom received any guidance or attention as caregivers.

“I would talk to few people who understood… Yes I feel [you need someone to talk to]… someone you are close to and they understand.”  – Arun

Poonam took care of Pranay by tending to every need of his and in the process forgot about her own problems. Not being much of a social person, she remained in the house and found it best not to share her problems. Arun further discusses how he sought support from few people and the role of spirituality in battling hard times.

The strong family bond helped Arun, Poonam and Pranay navigate through the caregiving journey.
