“You need to sacrifice a lot…but I never regret it.…When you want to do something do it full heartedly… ….of course you have to take care of yourself also”
From a young age Gita liked to take care of other people, she always put other people’s needs ahead of her own and felt great satisfaction in doing that. When her husband was unwell, she became the primary caregiver. She took on the role without complaining and sacrificed everything to take care of him. She did not trust anyone else to do the job. She gave up her hobbies and interests but never regretted it as she found alternatives to energize her. She put her heart and soul into caregiving and doing her best.
Gita says frustration is a common feeling among caregivers. She kept herself busy not just with keeping her home looking beautiful but also did everything for her husband, so naturally she was tired at the end of the day. As she woke up with renewed energy she felt guilty about feeling frustrated.
“Frustration did come at times… If I could find a little time to sit down and paint that would give me a lot of happiness”
When she did get the time, Gita treated herself to painting or singing songs, she even invited people over for meals at times. Ensuring active involvement in these small acts gave her a lot of happiness too.
Gita advises other caregivers to do their best for their loved one as it can give them a lot of satisfaction especially when the patient feels relief.
