Gentle Warriors: Raji’s Perspective

“I have to be strong, stronger than I was yesterday, so if you come back with that feeling, things look absolutely normal.”

Raji and her family led a peaceful life till their newly married son was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. After a few years, her son got divorced and Raji became the primary caregiver to her son. She and her husband did a lot of research on MS and realized the challenge they had ahead of them. They underwent many treatments including alternate therapies, they even took to him to Moscow for treatment, after which the progression slowed down.

Raji believes that in order to reduce the stress and the panic attacks it is important to plan your day well and not worry. As a caregiver one must face the situation head on and remain calm and positive to be able to give our best to the patient. Raji is very disciplined with her self-care routine. She does yoga and walks everyday for 30-40 minutes, she ensures that nothing comes in the way of that. Her walks help her clear her mind and think rationally so she can find solutions to her problems. Eventually she comes back energized and optimistic, ready to help her son deal with the condition.

Raji’s unconditional love and positive outlook is very inspiring. While her son dreams of being normal, it is Raji who gives him the confidence and positivity of one day being able to walk out on his own.

Sharing your story helps understand yourself — feelings, passions, hopes. It lightens the load and offers relief from loneliness, anxiety, anger or guilt. Our experiences and hopes can benefit others – to know that the challenges are the same, learn new ways to cope and care… they aren’t alone but part of a team.
