Making The Right Choices: How To Care For Aging Parents

“When you encounter something and you don’t know what to do with it, you have several choices: you can either take advantage of what is available, you can run screaming saying I can’t do this, or you can create your own solution.”

Older adults are becoming the primary caregivers to their aged parents. A caregiver of an older parent may want to do a lot for their loved one but may not know how to do it. Family caregivers need to communicate with other caregivers and learn from each other’s experiences.

“I couldn’t be their fixer, but I could be their informed advocate.”

A caregiver cannot control everything but one can always be a strong support system to the patient. Caregivers must understand that it is good to plan in advance, but always accept changes. Taking care of oneself and asking for assistance from others is necessary. Caregiving is a bittersweet journey so every moment should be cherished.

“I will always be grateful for what I learned about him, about me, about aging and about caregiving.”

The journey of a caregiver is about understanding themselves and also the people that they take care of. With constant support from others, a caregiver can learn how to care better for their patients. Asking for help when in doubt can make the experience of caregiving much more manageable.

If you can identify with this story, please share it with others who care for someone and help them share too. The feeling of understanding, not being alone and access to support is what keeps caregivers going.

Sharing your story helps understand yourself — feelings, passions, hopes. It lightens the load and offers relief from loneliness, anxiety, anger or guilt. Our experiences and hopes can benefit others – to know that the challenges are the same, learn new ways to cope and care… they aren’t alone but part of a team.
