“[Caregiver Saathi’s Support Group] was like my personal space… I never felt judged, I only felt pure acceptance… Don’t underestimate the power of a support group meeting”
Alisha has been a caregiver for 20 years. She looks back at the highs and lows, the criticism and advice that she came across through the journey. She talks about how the experience changes one’s life.
She mentions how she wanted to feel ‘normal’ and needed a space to express her thoughts. She joined Caregiver Saathi’s Heal Thy Self support group and the meetings helped her find that she was not alone indeed.
“At the support group meetings it’s not necessary I always get my problems solved, but whenever I attend I do feel recharged emotionally… nourished.”
She discusses what she gained from the meetings and how the groups offered emotional support. She believes in the transformative power of acceptance and encourages each caregiver out there to seek the support they need.
If you can identify with this story, please share it with others who care for someone and help them share too. The feeling of understanding, not being alone and access to support is what keeps caregivers going.
Sharing your story helps understand yourself — feelings, passions, hopes. It lightens the load and offers relief from loneliness, anxiety, anger or guilt. Our experiences and hopes can benefit others – to know that the challenges are the same, learn new ways to cope and care… they aren’t alone but part of a team.
